At its center, Finkel sleeps peacefully, curled into a perfect circle beneath a flowering tree as ribbons of turquoise, lavender, emerald, and gold flow around him. As my saga increased with very dramatic unfair hearings and due process violations and blatant constructive denials , I got more and more angry and had to reach for the canvas to project it.\u003c\/span\u003e\u003cspan\u003e\u003cb\u003e\u003c\/b\u003e\u003c\/span\u003e\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp dir=\"ltr\"\u003e\u003cspan\u003eI finally had a break in my case when they blatantly denied funding my service animal, claiming a service animal must be registered, but there is no such law on a federal level nor a national registration database. They lied and left me to deal with the repercussions of obtaining the animal and then asking for it to be included as a replacement for personal assistance. autistic people have a right to choose how much dependency they are forced on humans, strangers, adults in their community who come into their home and learn too much too fast. We need privacy.\u003c\/span\u003e\u003cspan\u003e\u003cb\u003e\u003c\/b\u003e\u003c\/span\u003e\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp dir=\"ltr\"\u003e\u003cspan\u003eUpon advice from my therapist, I went out with my dog. at the beach, it was a beautiful day and my dog got me to achieve 7,000 steps just from gently following him up and down the beach. His personality made it be an ice breaker where i didn't have to socialize but smiling to the people who were petting him as he approached every last human on the beach, was like a wingman and social integration opportunity that would be indignant to me if it was a paid caregiver wearing scrubs. On the way home from the beach, he was knackered from servicing for 4 hours! he curled into the happiest ball and snored all the way home. He then inhaled his dinner and slept straight through till this morning. He seems serene and content, having his fix with humans, whom he is innately bonded with in service. I felt reduced to a handout case, while simultaneously being expected to educate the very system responsible for understanding the law. Every hearing became another reminder that I had to research statutes, prepare legal arguments, explain my rights, and hand over the intellectual labor just to receive services I was already entitled to pursue. It felt like lending someone a hand so they could hand something back to me.\u003c\/span\u003e\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp dir=\"ltr\"\u003e\u003cspan\u003eAs the months passed, the hearings became more adversarial. Due process violations accumulated. Constructive denials replaced straightforward answers. Independence is not only about completing tasks. It is also about privacy, dignity, and choosing who enters your home. When government delegates billions of taxpayer dollars to regional centers, the people making decisions that affect the health, safety, and independence of disabled Californians should be identifiable, professionally accountable, and held to recognized standards of practice.\u003c\/span\u003e\u003cspan\u003e\u003cb\u003e\u003c\/b\u003e\u003c\/span\u003e\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp dir=\"ltr\"\u003e\u003cspan\u003eInstead, consumers are frequently told that decisions were made by \"the team.\" Who is the team? Who recommended the denial? Who evaluated the evidence? Who accepted responsibility? When decision-making is obscured behind committees and internal meetings that exclude the consumer, accountability becomes difficult to identify and even harder to enforce.\u003c\/span\u003e\u003cspan\u003e\u003cb\u003e\u003c\/b\u003e\u003c\/span\u003e\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp dir=\"ltr\"\u003e\u003cspan\u003eImagine if a physician denied a medically necessary wheelchair, refused additional respite despite documented caregiver burnout, or rejected another clinically supported service. That physician would be expected to document the clinical basis for the decision and could be subject to review by licensing boards, employers, courts, or professional peers if their conduct fell below the applicable standard of care.\u003c\/span\u003e\u003cspan\u003e\u003cb\u003e\u003c\/b\u003e\u003c\/span\u003e\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp dir=\"ltr\"\u003e\u003cspan\u003eRegional center service coordinators, however, are generally not practicing under a nationally recognized professional license with a defined scope of practice and independent disciplinary oversight. Yet they often serve as the gatekeepers to services that determine whether disabled people receive the supports they need to live safely and independently.\u003c\/span\u003e\u003cspan\u003e\u003cb\u003e\u003c\/b\u003e\u003c\/span\u003e\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp dir=\"ltr\"\u003e\u003cspan\u003eCalifornia should consider replacing the current model with licensed social workers or another licensed human services profession whose ethical duties, scope of practice, and accountability are clearly established.
